Thai Star wins Rail Jam @ WaterFest by the Bay

(Singapore, 26th September 2007) Thailand’s Tatsanai Kuakoonrat saw off stiff challenge from 29 other top regional wakeboard riders on Sunday to walk away with the top prize of $1,000 in the men’s wakeboard final at the Wakeboard and Wakeskate Rail Jam, held at the Marina Bay Floating Platform.

Held in conjunction with WaterFest by the Bay, Rail Jam was undoubtedly one of the star attractions over the two-day event, with the 30-odd riders from seven countries all over the world thrilling the estimated 15,000 crowd over the two days with gravity defying tricks as they battled for the $3,000 prize purse.

Kuakoonrat finished ahead of Korean Kim Yong Il and United Kingdom’s Mark Griffin, while Singapore's 14-year-old wakeboarding sensation Sasha Christian expectedly won the women's final, easily seeing off the challenge of Philippines’ Andrea Sevilla and Chie Ishii of Japan.

Meanwhile, in the similarly competitive Wakeskate final, Filipino Carlo Dela Torre bagged the top prize of $500 by edging out Thailand’s Chris Foo and compatriot Antonio Branco. It was the first time that a competitive Wakeskate event has been held in Singapore.

After the great success of Singapore’s first rail jam at Ngee Ann City in June, the Singapore Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (SWWF) takes its hardware (winch, pools and new rail) to the Marina Bay Floating Platform 25th and 26th August 2007.

This will be the very first time the general public is permitted on the floating platform, let alone have a go at the latest form of wakeboarding. Entries will be open to all riders including wakeskaters, with a new rail jam configuration and SGD3,000.00 cash purse.

The Rail Jam will be held in conjunction with Waterfest by the Bay that will feature a Jetski Race, Corporate Dragon Boat Race, Professional Waterski Show from China, Splash Battle Zone, Dog Show, Photography & Art Contest, Free Power Boat Rides and Free Banana boat rides for the public at Marina Bay.

The development of the high-speed, gas-powered winch is one of the newest and most exciting progressions in wakeboarding's young history. It has given riders the ability to take their sport to the streets with the use of portable pools, hitting rails & sliders while pulled by a winch. Called a rail jam, this is action sports up-close and very in-your-face and is as exciting for the riders as it is for spectators.

Sliding or grinding on rails has been a part of wakeboarding for the past few years but until now it has all happened behind a boat or PWC on a lake or ocean. Now, instead of watching the riders from 100 metres away on the shore, spectators are just a few metres from the action.
